How to Do the Barbell Shrug

  1. Stand holding barbell in front of thighs, overhand grip, shoulder-width. Arms straight.
  2. Shrug shoulders straight up. No rolling, no elbow bending.
  3. Squeeze traps hard at top. Hold 1-2 seconds.
  4. Lower under control. Full stretch at bottom.
  5. Repeat. Straight up, squeeze, straight down.

Barbell Shrug Mistakes to Avoid

Rolling shoulders — straight up and down only.
Bending elbows — keep arms locked straight.
Not holding at top — the isometric squeeze is critical.
Bar drifting forward — keep it close to or touching thighs.

Barbell Shrug Muscles Worked

The barbell shrug isolates the upper trapezius with heavy loading. Forearms work to grip the bar. Allows heavier loads than dumbbells for trap strength.

Barbell Shrug FAQ

Front or behind the back?
Front is standard and safer. Behind puts the shoulder in an awkward position. Stick with front.
Mixed grip or overhand?
Overhand builds grip. Mixed allows heavier loads. Straps are fine since grip isn't the point.
How much should I shrug?
Traps are strong — most can shrug more than they bench. But full range and hold beats heavy partials.
Smith machine shrugs?
Fine — the fixed path doesn't matter for shrugs since the bar only moves straight up and down.
